Why Teramachi / Kawaramachi for Pokemon Cards?

Kyoto (京都) may be famous for its temples and traditional culture, but the city also has a thriving card shop scene centered along Teramachi Street and Kawaramachi-dori. These covered shopping arcades in central Kyoto house several dedicated card stores alongside traditional shops and modern retailers.

For tourists visiting Kyoto's famous temples and shrines, the Teramachi/Kawaramachi area offers a perfect pit stop for card hunting. The area is walkable from Kyoto Station and right in the heart of the city's shopping district. Prices can be very competitive compared to Tokyo.

Getting to Teramachi / Kawaramachi

  • Hankyu Kyoto Line - Kawaramachi Station. Right in the shopping district. Direct from Osaka-Umeda (about 45 min).
  • Keihan Line - Gion-Shijo Station. Walk west across Shijo Bridge to Kawaramachi.
  • Kyoto City Bus - Shijo-Kawaramachi. Bus 4, 5, 17, 205 from Kyoto Station (about 15 min).
  • From Kyoto Station - Take the subway Karasuma Line to Shijo, then walk east (10 min). Or bus directly.

Tips for Foreign Visitors

  • Covered arcades - Teramachi and Shinkyogoku are covered shopping streets. Great for rainy day card hunting between temple visits.
  • Payment - Larger shops accept credit cards. Smaller stores may be cash-only.
  • Combine with sightseeing - Nishiki Market, Gion, and Kiyomizudera are all walkable from the card shop area.
  • Day trip from Osaka - Only 15 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen, or 45 min by Hankyu Line. Easy day trip.
